Callum Innes, Artist Talk and Exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester

Saturday morning was beautiful and sunny and I visited the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester to see the latest exhibition of artist Callum Innes and in the afternoon was very lucky to hear him talk about his work. The exhibition is in two rooms at the Whitworth and the first large room is lit by several floor to ceiling windows revealing and framing the landscape of the park next to the gallery. The effect of these windows, as Callum Innes suggests, is that the viewer gravitates towards them and turns to look at the artwork in the changing light of the day. It is always interesting to hear the artist speak in their own words about their work as it comes from the heart and is very personal.

In the second room is a series of Callum Innes' watercolours which are displayed horizontally on tables, rather than on the wall. This references the way in which the watercolours are made (see video below - best viewed in full screen) and allows the viewer to examine the works more closely.

There are lots of other good exhibitions to see and I particularly enjoyed  John Piper: The Mountains of Wales.
Other artists work available to see at the moment include: Richard Long; Michael Landy and Beryl Korot. 

I read about the Callum Innes exhibition and talk on the blog of artist Sandra Robinson The Colour of Ideas and met up with her to look around the gallery and listen to Callum speak.  We also went into the cafe which is another good reason to visit the Whitworth, ideal for a coffee, snack or meal, full of seasonal produce and friendly and helpful staff as are the gallery staff at the Whitworth.
