'The Space Between' Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery - 08 November 2014 - 28 February 2015

This weekend saw the opening of some new work of mine that is being exhibited in the new Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery from 8th November 2014 to 28th February 2015.

The inspiration for the artwork is derived from the snow laden landscape surrounding Wroxeter Roman City in early spring.   Snow simplifies the landscape and leaves bare bones of the features: hedges; trees; boundaries and marks on the landscape.   ‘The Space Between’ is the physical and temporal space between the two iconic structures at Wroxeter – The Old Work (part of the basilica wall built around 150 AD and at one time the only indication that a city existed) and the new recreated town house.

Further the title extends to the space between floor level (the herringbone floor) and the Roman artefacts excavated from the earth below.  The herringbone floor pattern contains the wear of human traces and has had to keep being re-laid throughout the years.  At the present time it lies hidden from sight in the city beneath a protective membrane.

Artefacts depicted in the work are in situ in the museum at Wroxeter; however, there may be one ‘wild card’, which is exhibited elsewhere.

My work is part of a larger exhibition of a group called re:collect that includes other new artwork inspired by the objects and heritage of Shrewsbury Museum. We have been supported and funded for this exhibition by Arts Council England.

What a lovely grey wall you have to form a backdrop for your embossed pieces. Is the concertina book yours too?

Embossing seems such an appropriate medium to use for archaeologically inspired work. I really like your idea, and wish that I could see the pieces more closely.

:-) the lovely grey wall was painted by me Olga after going through seven different shades of grey sample paint pots to choose the shade that complemented my work the best.

Yes the concertina book is mine and has a leather cover that wraps around the book. The leather cover is laminated on the inside with a print of mine based upon the herringbone floor of Wroxeter Roman City.

Thank you for your comments about the embossing and I will be posting further photos that will show the work more closely.
